Enjoy one of the most beautiful lakes of Greece!
At an altitude of 750m, Plastiras lake is one of the highest in Europe!
Plastiras lake was named after Nikolaos Plastiras (General and former Prime Minister of Greece) who was the first to visualize the creation of a lake in this location, back in 1925. It was formed in 1959, with the completion of the dam at the southern end of the Tavropos or Megdovas river.
The lake holds up to 400 million cubic meters of fresh water and is used for irrigation and as a power source of a hydroelectric plant,. It is also the main water source to the nearby city of Karditsa. Due to its altitude (750m – one of the highest lakes in Europe) it is a popular tourist resort in Greece, as the formed landscape is quite beautiful and unique.
The depth of the lake varies, as it is determined by the original landscape of the area before it was flooded. It has a maximum length of 12 kilometers, a width of 4 kilometers, and an overall surface of 24 square kilometers. The maximum depth is 60 meters.
The lake itself and the surrounding environment are perfect for activities, exploration and relaxation. You can enjoy the lake with hydrobike and archery, and its surroundings with hiking, mountain bike and jeep tours! Greek Adventure can organize a gorgeous excursion for you in the Plastiras lake and of course arrange all other touristsic services you may need, like accommodation and transportation.
An excursion to the lake can be perfectly combined with a visit to magnificent Meteora that is located nearby!
