Canyoning Kleftis gorge in Grevena region
This canyoning activity takes place at the roots of mountain Orliakas, close to the historic village of Spileon.
According to an old legend, a thief was persecuted by the Turks during the Ottoman occupation and reached the gorge of Liatissa in Grevena region. Realizing the difficulty of passing through to the other side of the canyon, he made a promise that if he succeeded to jump safely, he would later build a traditional stone bridge. He did jump safely and kept his promise, so since then (around 1800 AD), there is a beautiful stone bridge with one arch there, that connects the two sides of the gorge. Its name is “the bridge of Kleftis” (bridge of the thief).
This canyoning activity takes place at the roots of mountain Orliakas, close to the historic village of Spileon. The canyoning route begins from another great old stone bridge (Katsogiannis – also built around 1800 AD) and ends right before the bridge of Kleftis. It is a narrow gorge, with a length of almost 1 km and width of up to 4 meters, with rocks on both sides reaching heights of 150 m. Totally dark in a few spots, this route is a unique one.
