Zagori is part of the Vikos - Aoos National Park of Ioannina region in Greece, which belongs in the Natura 2000 ecological network and is also a UNESCO Geopark.

We will hike across the Vikos gorge, the deepest canyon of the world and also get to know this area of magnificent natural beauty, with its old stone bridges, its traditional architecture and gorgeous local delicacies.

DAY 1

Kipoi

Arrive at Kipoi village.

Overnight at Kipoi

DAY 2

Kipoi-Monodendri

Our day starts from Kipoi village where we will meet with the rest of our group in the main square of village. Our guide will start with a short briefing and soon we will start our tour walking parallelly to the main road until we will reach the famous old stone bridge of Plakida. After 800 m. we will cross the old bridge of Captain Arkouda (that means Bear) and we will continue to Dilofo that is one of the most beautiful villages of the Zagori region. After Dilofo we will continue to for 4 km until we reach the Vitsa village. From there we will arrive at Monodendri in about an hour, which is our final destination for the day.

Overnight at Monodendri

DAY 3

Monodendri-Vikos

Our day starts at the village of Monodendri from where we will go to the amazing gorge of Vikos (the deepest gorge in the world, according to the Guinness book of world records). After we pass through the village we will find the entrance of the Monodendri steps old path that will take us to the core of the gorge (1.5 km downhill, elevation difference of 375 m). For the next 9 km. we will hike to different elevation rates, in a wonderful place with big laminated stones. We will always have the Vikos river at the right hand side and until we reach the village of Vikos.

Overnight at Vikos.

DAY 4

Vikos-Papigo

Τhe day starts at the village of Vikos and we will be heading to the springs of Voidomatis River. Afterwards we will start to hike until we reach the village of Megalo Papingo. A great view of Mountain Tymfi will help us spot the hiking destinations of the next days. Cocluding the day's tour we will arrive to Megalo Papingo.

DAY 5

Papigo-Papigo

Our fifth day starts from the main road that leads to Megalo Papingo. After 800 m we will follow the path that leads to the old bridge of Loli. Less than 2.5 km away, we will fing a great viewpoint of Kokkino Lithari, with its unique red colored limestones, residing between the peak of Astraka and the Vikos Gorge. After one more kilometer we will get back to Megalo Papingo.

DAY 6

Papigo-Astraka refuge

Mikro Papigo – Mountain shelter of Astraka

At the foot of Mt.Tymfi (altitude 980m.) resides the village of Mikro Papingo which is the starting point of today's tour. After crossing the village, we will hike in the well-marked trail that leads to the refuge of Astraka. The climb is relatively smooth and after about 5.5 km. in an altitude of 1000 m. where we will find springs of fresh water, we will reach a good place to rest and enjoy the view. At the end of the path we will find the refuge of Astraka in an altitude of 1950 m., where we will spend the night.

Refuge of Astraka - Tymfis Dragon Lake (optional)

From the refuge, we can optionally visit the Alpine Lake (Dragon Lake) of Tymfis, one of the few habitats of the "small dragons" or Alpine Triton (Ichthyosaura alpestris) in an attitude of 2010m. The distance between the Dragon Lake and the refuge is about 2.75 km and provides awesome viewpoints.

Overnight at the Astraka refuge.

DAY 7

Refuge-Papigo

On the last day of our trip we will return back to Mikro Papingo by a different path that goes though the peak of Astraka, (second highest pick of Tumfis Mountain with an altitude of 2432m.). We will pass between Gamila and Astraka peaks and continue our hike for about 6 km having Loytsa Robozi (Seasonal Lake) on our left hand. For the last 2.5 km we will follow the main path (Refuge - Mikro Papingo) until we reach the village and complete our tour.

Total Distance 12.5 km.

Transfer to back to Kipi Village.

What participants should have with them: Please try to travel as light as possible; remember that you must carry everything you bring on all the days' walk, Large, comfortable rucksack (40-50 litres) with padded straps and waist belt, internal frame preferred; waterproof liner recommended to keep clothing, etc. dry inside, Sturdy, worn in trekking shoes, Good waterproof top with hood, Warm clothes, both for windy / cold daytime conditions and for the cool evenings (fleece tops or similar), Shorts and long trousers for walking, preferably quick-drying material (cotton or polycotton not denim), Sweatshirts or T-shirts for walking, at least one with long sleeves and collar (against sun-burn), Sheet sleeping bag or similar (e.g. duvet cover), for the overnights in the refuge, although blankets will be available, Sunglasses, towel, sun hat or cap, sun block, Penknife, Water bottle, Wash bag and simple first aid kit (plasters or blister kit, aspirin or similar, antiseptic), Photographers: bring your cameras, Torch (head torch if you have one), Walking sticks
