The activity

Rafting is the descent of a river in an inflatable boat. The number of passengers is usually 2-8 people with the driver. The course of the boat is mainly determined by the current of the river while a guide gives the orders, which are carried out by the passengers with the help of oars, and he steers the boat safely avoiding obstacles along the way. Rafting in Pinios, while crossing the Tempe Valley, combines action while being in contact with nature which is something anyone can enjoy, even without previous experience only with a little training just before the activity.

The area

The valley of Tempe is one of the most beautiful locations in Thessaly and Greece in general, formed between the mountains Olympus and Kissavos (Ossa). A narrow passage of 10 kilometers long full of amazing natural beauty just where the Pinios river flows, which then in turn flows into the Aegean. At the narrowest point of the valley, a gorge 25 meters wide and about 400 meters high is formed.

The history

The name of the valley of Tempes has been preserved since antiquity and it is mentioned for the first time in Herodotus. The name probably comes from the word “tempos” – pl. “tempi”of the Thessalian dialect. In ancient texts the god Apollo is referred to as “Aplous Tebeitas”. The valley of Tempe is the main passage from the north to the south of Greece and from ancient times to modern history it was of great strategic importance.

Nature and People

Many poets, writers, painters and historian-travelers from ancient times, from the period of Romanticism mainly in the 18th century, but also modern ones, have glorified with their works the incomparable natural beauty of the valley of Tempe. The vegetation of the valley includes many types of forests and rare endemic plants that have included Tempi in the Natura network as “Tempi Valley Aesthetic Forest”. Also in Tempi there are many interesting species of birds, amphibians and mammals, some of which we will meet when crossing the valley by boat.
